Malang Tempoe Doeloe

Malang Kembali or Malang Tempoe Doeloe is an annually event in Malang to celebrate Malang’s birthday. This event is held on Jl. Ijen and surroundings. Why should here ? As we know thet Jl. Ijen is a very famous street in colonial era. All of Dutch people lived there and its situation still original although only 90% original.
This year Malang Kembali is the second and of course it was more wonderful than last year. And this event lasted for 5 days, longer than last year that only 3 days. This event start from May 2nd 2007 and finished last May 6th 2007. The visitors must wear dress code: traditional cloth, colonial cloth and every accessories that related with colonial era and old fashion.
I went there with my best friends Wayan, Intan and her fam (they came special from Bali to enjoy the event) and some other friends. We wore kebaya and slipper, some of my friends wore sarongs, kelompen, batik,Dutch army costume or we called kenil. Unfortunately, I can’t get the best picture, soooo crowded, to enjoy the venue was so difficult, but I was so happy. This annually event is my most favorite. I can tell to many friends in Bali that there’s an annually event in Malang that as wonderful as in Bali although only one.
My friends so curious to come to the event and promised that they all will come next year.

Many venues that we have visited. Food, food, food. Yeah… there were many food that used to exist in the colonial era. There were Javanese food like: thiwul, tetelan tunu, sego katrok, sego jagung, jajan pasar, etc. And the happiest for me was: I CAN FIND MY CHILDHOOD MOST FAVORITE CANDY AND ICE, GELALI AND ES GANDUL TALI MERANG. I can’t find those food now especially the original one. I bought some and gave them to my friends. They like them very much. Sate karak from Madura was also available here. We were enjoying the food while listened to the keroncong music.


We watch Topeng Dance, Ludruk and film about the struggle of our heroes in colonial era.
Wow.. I can’t tell them with any words you should come and enjoy by yourself, just get the charming of Malang Tempoe Doeloe.
We went around by cart or dokar, just pay Rp 15000 and we can see around. We stopped in public library and saw many pictures and paintings of Malang Tempoe Doeloe. I imagined what a beautiful Malang was! Clean, no beggar, no street vendors, different with this present. So crowded, dirty, untidy many useless buildings.

Wishing the next Malang Tempoe Doeloe will be more excited and more wonderful. Maybe there will be International competition like: Enggrang games, Go Back To Door game, the best costume, the unique costume, the best stand, etc.
